I’ve been asked to write a blog. It’s not very often that I get a chance to write, however, truth be told, it’s something I love to do!
There are always high highs and low lows within recruitment, but my personal experience this calendar year to date, has been extremely hard, stressful and soul destroying at times! This could be a controversial read, however, I thought I would share over the next few weeks some of the top reasons why it’s been a frustrating time for me as an experienced recruiter. It would be great to hear if anyone else is experiencing the same pain!
Let’s get straight into it!
Ghosting - a hot topic, usually in the world of dating but it feeds into recruitment just as much!
I can empathise with candidates, I really can, as I know there are some recruiters out there that are non-communicative, that over-promise and under-deliver, and because of this, quite often, I hear reluctance from candidates wanting to open up, due to their bad experiences, they don’t hold out much hope speaking to recruiters again for this reason and can come across as guarded, un-open and short. But as a recruiter who places huge importance on honest and open communication, it is the most frustrating experience to be “ghosted” and this happens frequently.
It can happen when I’ve diarised a call with a candidate and they simply disappear from me, never to be heard from again. This also happens with scheduled video calls. And it makes me wonder about the reasons why an individual would do this. Has this candidate changed their mind about the specific role they applied for and realised that it’s not for them? Have they managed to find themselves another role? Two both perfectly reasonable explanations. A candidate is well within their rights to change their mind and to accept another job. I just so wish they would tell me so! I’m not a pushy recruiter. In this modern age, there are many forms of communication in which they could use to tell me, rather than ghost altogether. What has happened to integrity within individuals?! Please simply let us know and communicate!
